Soy helped build aquaculture into a global force. How far can it take it?
Soy has fueled the growth of aquaculture, but environmental and social concerns for some producing areas are prompting some fish farmers to take stock.
Health & Welfare
Development and testing of tilapia welfare assessment protocol begins alignment to procedures used for other aquatic, terrestrial farm animals.

Health & Welfare
Study evaluates compensatory growth in shrimp at different temperatures and under feed restrictions in efforts to reduce costs and improve water quality.
Intelligence
The neotropical fish species trahira has aquaculture potential under semi-intensive production conditions, according to a study in Brazil.
Responsibility
Studies in Brazil over the last five years addressed the challenges facing commercial producers of the important, air-breathing, freshwater fish pirarucu in order to support and expand production.
Innovation & Investment
After concentrating mainly on the domestic market, the Brazilian Shrimp Farmers Association says producers are returning to international trade and competition, seeking intensified production and expansion.
Aquafeeds
A study of experimental diets for juvenile shrimp showed a halving of fishmeal usage. Limited inclusion of krill meal offset other expensive ingredients.
Aquafeeds
Larval shrimp performance (feed conversion and final weight) in a biofloc nursery system improved with both added diatoms (Navicula sp.) and rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis).
Health & Welfare
Intelligence
The yellow tail characin (Astyanax bimaculatus) is a species with much potential for expanded aquaculture production in Brazil, with many characteristics suitable for culture. More research is needed to improve and optimize aquaculture production technologies for this interesting species.
Health & Welfare
A study with Nile tilapia conducted in commercial production cages in Brazil showed the potential – in the absence of major disease threats – of a commercial, natural growth promotor that modulates the microbiota (inhibiting growth of pathogenic bacteria and promoting growth of beneficial bacteria) and inhibits quorum sensing.
Responsibility
La acuacultura ha experimentado su mayor crecimiento en la última década (con un promedio de 8 por ciento por año) en comparación con otras industrias animales, pero todavía está muy por detrás de la producción alcanzada por las industrias avícola, bovina y porcina.
Intelligence
Brazil will have to deal with an adverse economic and political environment in the next few years. One should expect high value fish products like shrimp, tilapia, Chilean salmon and cod being replaced by more affordable seafood and alternative meats, as consumers keep losing purchasing power due to inflation, unemployment and monetary devaluation.
Innovation & Investment
Camanor Produtos Marinhos Ltda. operates a land-based, multi-species concept for sustainable shrimp production called AquaScience. The Global Aquaculture Alliance has named Camanor the winner of its annual Aquaculture Innovation and Leadership award. Director Werner Jost discusses the process.
Innovation & Investment
The aquaculture industry in Brazil is moving toward further expansion with the support of the federal government. A key strategy of the More Fishing and Aquaculture plan is the development of aquaculture in federal waters. The plan promotes sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture by linking those involved and consolidating state policies addressing social inclusion, security and food sovereignty. Tilapia is the main farmed fish, although tambaqui and others have potential for large-scale production due to their wide acceptance by consumers.
