The Global Aquaculture Alliance’s annual GOAL production survey data shows that farmed marine finfish production increased 73 percent from 2009 to 2019.

The availability of a cost-effective grow-out feed formulation is an ongoing bottleneck for the expansion of cobia production. Studies by the authors show that the development of an aquafeed with limited or no fish oil content is possible. 

University of Miami professor says the U.S. seafood marketplace needs to embrace 'plate-sized' fish if a domestic aquaculture industry is to become sustainable and profitable.  

Since fish consume more feed in the final stages of growout, the development of ecologically efficient and nutritionally adequate diets for adult fish should be a priority. Digestible protein-digestible energy ratios are important for optimizing feeding efficiency in feed formulation and aquaculture production.

In a study of juvenile cobia diets, results suggested that lipid sources with high levels of saturated fatty acids and low polyunsaturated fatty acids can replace a large percentage of fish oil in feeds if they are amended with DHA. 

A unique pilot project supported by northern Chile’s biggest power-generating company and the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture is raising cobia in a recirculating aquaculture system in the desert. 

Scientists have been working to understand cobia’s nutritional requirements and advance the economic and environmental sustainability of feeding carnivorous fish using fishmeal alternatives. 

The establishment of land-based recirculating systems for cobia could expand production of the species. The authors, who demonstrated cobia are well suited for culture in tanks, conducted a study to compare the performance of cobia reared at different densities. 

A project of the Soy-in-Aquaculture program evaluated the feasibility of using soy protein concentrate and soybean meal to replace fishmeal in cobia diets.
