There are similarities and differences between the various aquaculture certification programs but until recently there has been little publicly available analysis to document those points. Michael Tlusty, director of ocean sustainability science at the New England Aquarium, provided it at GOAL 2016. 

The GOAL 2016 survey for global production of farmed fish shows that most major finfish groups increased their farmed production in 2015. The total production of species and countries covered by the survey is forecasted to reach 42 MMT in 2016.  

Each year the attendees of the Global Aquaculture Alliance’s GOAL conference – held in September in Guangzhou, China – have the opportunity to answer poll questions posed by speakers and moderators of panel discussions. 

On the third and final day of the Global Aquaculture Alliance’s annual GOAL conference, held in Guangzhou, China, the theme of “healthy planet” permeated every presentation. Innovation, investment, efficiency, transparency and improvement are the clarion calls for aquaculture.

Seafood companies are not only striving to become sustainable and environmentally friendly; they are grappling with social responsibility issues that grab international headlines and rightfully force all links of the supply chain to button up their operations and put human rights above all else. 

Some of the world’s top aquatic animal disease experts shared knowledge about mitigation techniques at the GOAL conference in Guangzhou, China. Topics included sea lice, streptococcus and EHP, which was referred to as the “most insidious” disease impacting shrimp production. 

During an informative pre-GOAL special session, several marine ingredient and aquaculture experts discussed the challenges of responsible sourcing of fishmeal and fish oil supplies – essential ingredients in the aquaculture industry’s explosive growth over the past three decades and its future prospects. 

Quantidoc AS in Norway is the commercialization of Prof. Karin Pittman’s years of fish health research. Pittman, winner of this year’s Global Aquaculture Innovation and Leadership Award, utilizes stereology to measure and better understand mucous on gill, gut and skin tissues – the first line of defense for fish. 

Ten years in China’s largest city have given Chef Rolf Knecht a solid perspective on the nation’s rapidly changing economy and the impacts on consumer food purchases. Knecht, who will speak during the GOAL marketplace roundtables, fields questions about seafood trends, certification and food safety. 

Intensive pond aquaculture (IPA) technology, a floating, in-pond raceway system developed in the United States, is being adopted fast in China, just three years after its introduction, says Jim Zhang, aquaculture program manager for USSEC-China.  

This year’s GOAL conference will be held in China, birthplace of aquaculture. There’s no better place to discuss innovation, says Michael Tlusty, director of ocean sustainability science at the New England Aquarium, because fresh thinking defeats complacency.
