Desafíos de laboratorio y un estudio caso-control se utilizaron para determinar los efectos de la infección por EHP en dos enfermedades de Vibrio: necrosis hepatopancreática aguda (AHPND) y necrosis hepatopancreática séptica (SHPN). 

Laboratory challenges and a case-control study were used to determine the effects of EHP infection on two Vibrio diseases: acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) and septic hepatopancreatic necrosis (SHPN). 

Un estudio realizado en Huila, Colombia, probó los efectos del aditivo de alimentos diformato de potasio sobre el desempeño de la tilapia juvenil. Los resultados mostraron un índice de productividad de peces mejorado, menor mortalidad y mejoras en el aumento de peso. 

A study conducted in Huila, Colombia, tested the effects of the feed additive potassium diformate on the performance of juvenile tilapia. Results showed an enhanced fish productivity index, lower mortality and improvements in weight gain. 

Early Mortality Syndrome has devastated farmed shrimp in Asia and Latin America. With better understanding of the pathogen and the development and improvement of novel strategies, shrimp farmers are now able to better manage the disease. 

A novel blend of organic acids (OAB) microencapsulated in a lipid matrix and supplemented in the diets of Litopenaeus vannamei enhanced their growth, phosphorus utilization, resistance to Vibrio harveyi and immunity. This may have implications as an eco-friendly prophylactic strategy. 

A study confirmed the utility for improved polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection of the Vibrio bacteria that cause acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) in asymptomatic shrimp by permitting the shrimp to expire and decompose for several hours prior to preservation and PCR processing. 

Strategies to control Vibrio bacteria at aquaculture farms must revolve around limiting inputs, including those from postlarvae suppliers, those that come in with the water, those that remain in the soil between crops and those in the feed and accumulated organic matter. 

Control of Vibrio bacteria should focus on minimizing overall bacterial loads and the potential for horizontal transmission. The challenge for hatchery managers is identifying gaps in biosecurity and plugging them without creating niches for other potential pathogens. 

Vibrio infections are an increasingly common problem in intensive shrimp culture. As evidenced by study results, weekly Vibrio monitoring can be a useful tool for predicting bacterial disease outbreaks. 

Sodium butyrate has potential as an additive for marine shrimp diets, improving both the balance of intestinal bacterial flora and performance of the shrimp. 

1-monoglycerides are known for their antibacterial and antiviral effects in the human pharmaceutical and animal husbandry industries. As a substitution for the preventive use of antibiotics, these molecules are being evaluated in the fight against AHPND. 

Monitoring of Vibrio bacteria in shrimp larvae determined a relationship among hepatopancreas color, bacteria concentration and signs of early mortality syndrome. 

Ideally, farmers need to create conditions that make it harder for the pathogenic Vibrio that causes AHPN to colonize animals’ stomachs and for the toxin to produce its pathology. Exclusion where possible and appropriate management of ecosystems offer hope in addressing AHPN. 

Vibrio parahaemolyticus, a strain of which is the cause of acute hepatopancreatic necrosis (AHPN), has both virulent and benign strains. This strain colonizes the stomachs of shrimp by the formation of a biofilm, which protects it from antibiotics and other potential treatments.
