AquaChile Completes New BAP-C Program
Empresas AquaChile S.A. has completed the Best Aquaculture Practices’ (BAP) multi-site cluster program (BAP-C), resulting in six of its salmon hatcheries in Chile attaining BAP certification and three of its salmon hatcheries attaining BAP re-certification, the Global Aquaculture Alliance announced in late November.
AquaChile was a pioneer in that it was the first company to enroll its hatcheries in the new BAP-C program, which allows an applicant to combine multiple production units within a defined geographical area to apply for BAP certification for all facilities during a sequence of short audits. Applicants can include hatcheries and farms.
With the BAP-C program, audit efficiency is achieved through common requirements to all member production units, allowing a third-party auditor to shorten his/her audit time on each site, visiting multiple sites in the same day.
AquaChile is capable of offering four-star BAP salmon. In addition to nine hatcheries, two processing plants, 17 farm sites and three of the feed mills from which it sources feed are BAP certified. Four star is the highest designation in the BAP program, which is the world’s most comprehensive third-party aquaculture certification program, with standards encompassing environmental responsibility, social responsibility, food safety, animal health and welfare and traceability.
