GAA, Barton Seaver Partner to Promote Responsible Aquaculture
The Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) is partnering with chef, author and seafood advocate Barton Seaver to raise awareness of responsible aquaculture and the importance of sourcing seafood with provenance.
The partnership centers on Seaver’s contribution to Cooking Light, writing a monthly column for the magazine featuring healthy seafood recipes. The first column, titled “3 Tips for a Better Broiled Fish,” features tilapia.
Cooking Light has a print reach of more than 9.3 million and more than 3.1 million unique visitors to its website. In addition, Seaver will contribute content to GAA to supplement his work in Cooking Light and will speak to responsible aquaculture and the importance of sourcing seafood with provenance at public forums.
“It is important to recognize that seafood is categorically one of the healthiest foods humans can eat. As a matter of public health, we must work to increase seafood product and consumption just to meet our own government’s recommendations for twice weekly consumption of fish for every American. It is not a stretch to say that developing the United State aquaculture industry as a trusted source for seafood would lead to increased consumer confidence and consumption all American seafood,” said Seaver.
“Barton’s holistic approach to responsible seafood is in line with GAA’s vision of feeding the world through responsible aquaculture,” added GAA Executive Director Wally Stevens. “We’re pleased to help in his effort to encourage the public to eat more responsible produced seafood.”
Seaver most recently served as director of the healthy and sustainable food program at Harvard University’s School of Public Health. He is a National Geographic Fellow and was a New England Aquarium Sustainability Fellow. His cookbooks include “For Cod and Country”, “Two if by Sea” and the recently released “American Seafood: Heritage, Culture & Cookery from Sea to Shining Sea.”
Seaver also has partnerships with Verlasso Salmon, Regal Springs Tilapia and Zeeland Kingfish, all in an effort to encourage responsible seafood consumption.
