Brazilian Shrimp Producer Wins Global Aquaculture Innovation & Leadership Award
Congratulations to Brazil’s Camanor Produtos Marinhos Ltda., winner of this year’s Preferred Freezer Services Global Aquaculture Innovation & Leadership Award, the Global Aquaculture Alliance announced on Monday, Oct. 19.
Camanor Director Werner Jost will accept the award for Camanor’s AquaScience® technology at GAA’s GOAL 2015 conference at the Four Seasons in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 11:10 a.m. At GOAL 2015, Jost will give a presentation after being presented with a plaque and a U.S. $1,000 cash prize.
Jost calls AquaScience® a “new concept in sustainable shrimp production.” Camanor’s high-density, land-based facility in Natal, Brazil, recycles water for multiple production cycles while preventing environmental degradation and the use of chemicals or antibiotics. The controlled environment eliminates potential pathogens that disrupt and sometimes decimate harvests.
This is the third consecutive year that GAA has offered the award, which is designed to recognize innovative practices that overcome production challenges or mitigate negative environmental or social impacts at aquaculture farms. Last year, the award was expanded to include leadership.
This year, GAA received about 10 applications for the award. “The panel was impressed by the quality of the nominees but found the task of identifying the winner to be particularly tricky this year,” said Best Aquaculture Practices Standards Coordinator Dan Lee.
In addition to Lee, the four judges were GAA President Chamberlain; Michael Tlusty, director of ocean sustainability science at the New England Aquarium; and Dawn Purchase, senior aquaculture officer at the Marine Conservation Society. Chamberlain, Tlusty and Purchase are also members of the BAP Standards Oversight Committee.
The 2014 winner was Rodrigo Prado, a civil engineer and director of USONIC Ltda. in Puerto Montt, Chile, and the 2013 winner was Amir Sagi, Ph.D., a professor at Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Israel.
