BAP Spotlight Story: Fuqing Yihua Aquatic Food Co. Ltd.

The Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) Program’s “Spotlight Stories” highlight BAP-certified producers around the world and the stories of the people behind them. This Spotlight Story features Fuqing Yihua Aquatic Food Co. Ltd., a Chinese shrimp producer.

BAP: What inspired you to become involved in the seafood industry?

Fuqing Yihua: Fuqing City is a unique geographical location with high-quality port resources. In the early 1990s, Fuqing City opened a global layout, and the company was also expanding its factories under this boom.

BAP: When was your company established and how many employees are there?

Fuqing Yihua: Fuqing Yihua Aquatic Food Co. Ltd. was established in 1992, and the company has nearly 1,000 employees, including temporary workers.

BAP: How has the aquaculture industry impacted your life personally?

Fuqing Yihua: After many years of hard work at the company’s grassroots level, I finally mastered a series of related knowledge from production to sales, aiming at the future and making the company bigger and stronger.

BAP: How is your company involved in the local community?

Fuqing Yihua: Since its establishment for many years, the company has strived to develop in a healthy manner, communicate and learn with other companies, and obtain better resources and industry trends. The company actively joins the Provincial Quality Association, City Safety Association, China Fisheries Association and other associations.

BAP: What year did your facility become BAP-certified, and what were the main motivators in deciding to do so?

Fuqing Yihua: The company obtained BAP certification in 2007. Obtaining BAP certification is the trend of corporate development, allowing companies to further gain a place in global aquatic product sales, so that the company’s products can comply with international operating standards and conform to the current consumer demand for food safety, environmental responsibility and social responsibility for the market, which is important.

BAP: How has becoming certified improved your business, internally and externally?

Fuqing Yihua: Starting from the raw materials, we will make the products more competitive. From the perspective of the long-term strategic development of the company, obtaining BAP certification is conducive to product sales in foreign markets.

Being able to pass this certification is helpful to the positioning of shrimp in the current international market, thereby improving the added value and competitiveness of the product.
