GAA, BAP Featured At China Tilapia Forum

The Global Aquaculture Alliance participated in the 11th International Tilapia Industry Development Forum in Beihai, Guangxi, China, from Nov. 18 to 19.

janebiattilapiaforumOrganized by the China Aquatic Products Processing and Marketing Alliance (CAPPMA), with which GAA has a memorandum of understanding (MoU), the forum acts as a platform for industry representatives to exchange information with government officials, academics, scientists and members of the NGO community. China is the world’s largest tilapia producer.

Jane Bi (pictured on the far right), market development manager-Asia for GAA’s Best Aquaculture Practice (BAP) division, gave a presentation on Nov. 18. Her presentation focused on the international market trends influencing tilapia sourcing, particularly in Europe and North America, and the advantages of the BAP third-party certification program.

Bi detailed the comprehensiveness of the BAP program—which encompasses environmental responsibility, social responsibility, food safety, animal health and welfare, and traceability–and the broad market support that the BAP program enjoys, as many of the world’s leading retail and foodservice companies endorse the BAP program and source tilapia from BAP-certified facilities. Following her presentation, Bi fielded a number of questions from the audience.

After the forum, Carson Roper, BAP international business development manager, joined Bi to visit a number of tilapia processors and farmers in Hainan.
