BAP Launches Video Featuring Gemso Tilapia Farm
The Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) program recently launched a new video featuring BAP-certified Acuicuola Gemso tilapia farm in Sonora, Mexico. The video stems from a partnership with the U.S. Soybean Export Council to increase awareness of responsible aquaculture, the BAP certification program and sustainable feed.
Gemso obtained BAP certification in 2014, demonstrating its commitment to responsible and sustainable aquaculture practices. Gemso is a great example of a BAP-certified facility that not only uses responsible aquaculture practices but also has had a positive impact on its local community. Gemso is located in the mountains in Sonora, an extremely rural area where job opportunities are limited. The company employs more than 120 people, including many women who previously did not have any work experience.
The video not only shines a light on Gemso’s responsible practices and impacts on the community but also how plant-based ingredients like soy have helped supplement the use of wild-caught fish used in feed. Says Juan Antonio Loustaunau, Gemso’s facility manager, “Soy protein is truly more sustainable. It’s the most sustainable protein there is right now for animal feed.”
