GAA’s Hart to Speak at CAPPMA’s Zhejiang Online Seafood Trade Fair
Global Aquaculture Alliance VP Steve Hart is among the speakers giving opening remarks at the Zhejiang Online Seafood Trade Fair on May 25.
Organized by the China Aquatic Products Processing and Marketing Association (CAPPMA), this year’s event, which runs from May 25 to 29, is virtual.
Hart’s pre-recorded speech will focus on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global seafood trade. He will talk about the benefits of third-party certification programs like GAA’s Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP), especially during these uncertain times, and changing trends in retail and foodservice that are altering the manner in which seafood is bought and sold.
“This year has created a lot of challenges for all of us in the seafood industry, but it also creating new opportunities for innovation. Chinese producers are among the leaders in supplying seafood to global markets, and they are finding unique ways to continue to showcase their products even in times when international travel isn’t possible,” said Hart, who overseas market development for BAP in Asia.
After a series of opening remarks, the “exhibition” part of the event will open to pre-scheduled meetings, whereby buyers and sellers can meet to discuss business and introduce new products. (English interpretation will be provided.) There are nearly 50 exhibitors at the event currently. Zhejiang province represents about 10 percent of China’s total seafood production. GAA has been working closely with CAPPMA since at least 2014, when the two organizations signed a memorandum of understanding to work collaboratively to advance responsible aquaculture in China and globally through the exchange of information and research.
