Lidl US Commits To BAP As Part Of Sustainable Seafood Sourcing Policy
Best Aquaculture Practices is among the third-party certification programs that Lidl US has committed to as part of its sustainable seafood sourcing policy.
The commitment came on May 17 as Lidl, one of the world’s largest retailers, announced that it is opening its first U.S. stores on June 15, with a total of 20 U.S. stores opening in the summer of 2017.
“This is a tremendous step by Lidl to ensure that its entire core assortment of fresh and frozen seafood is third-party certified” said Chris Keller, BAP’s director of North American market development. “This important commitment helps address issues such as disease, antibiotic use and social welfare in the supply chain. Lidl clearly sees how this is the next frontier in responsible and sustainable sourcing. We applaud the vision and commitment of Lidl as they join with BAP to drive true change in the marketplace and the industry.”
“We are pleased to announce that our entire everyday fresh and frozen seafood assortment will be certified sustainable,” said Boudewijn Tiktak, chief commercial officer at Lidl US.
Based in Germany, Lidl operates about 10,000 stores in 27 countries throughout Europe.
