Oceanpick Barramundi Farm First in Sri Lanka to Land BAP
Add Sri Lanka to the list of countries with a Best Aquaculture Practices-certified facility.
Sri Lanka became the 34th country with a BAP-certified facility in mid-March with the BAP certification of Oceanpick Pvt. Ltd.’s barramundi farm.
The barramundi, which is also knows as Asian sea bass, is grown in floating cages about 12 miles off the coast of Trincomalee in northeastern Sri Lanka.
Founded in 2012, Oceanpick is the only offshore aquaculture operation in Sri Lanka, billing itself as South Asia’s first-ever commercial-scale offshore barramundi farm. Oceanpick is a joint venture between Aberdeen Holding, Kames Fish Farming Ltd. of Scotland and other investors.
Through the end of February, there were 2,341 BAP-certified processing plants, farms, hatcheries and feed mills worldwide, representing 1.57 million metric tons annually at the processing level.
