Petuna Earns BAP Certification For Ocean Trout Farm - Global Seafood Alliance

Petuna Earns BAP Certification For Ocean Trout Farm

Congratulations to Petuna Aquaculture Pty. Ltd., the world’s first marine-farming company to attain Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification for both salmon and trout at the same farm site, the Global Aquaculture Alliance announced in mid-July.

The company earned the distinction when its Liberty Point ocean trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farm site in Macquarie Harbour, on Tasmania’s west coast, attained BAP certification.

Last August, the company’s Table Head Atlantic salmon farm site, also in Macquarie Harbour, attained BAP certification.

“We are extremely pleased to achieve BAP certification for our ocean trout. Environmental and social responsibility are key to our business, and adding ocean trout to our already accredited Atlantic salmon demonstrates the continued hard work and dedication our team puts in across every aspect of our business,” said Mark Porter, CEO of Petuna Aquaculture.

“With only about 15 percent of aquaculture ventures worldwide receiving third-party accreditation, we are proud to have Petuna recognized for our sustainability work in not only one but both our farmed species,” he added.

Petuna is Tasmania’s largest multi-species seafood provider, rearing Atlantic salmon and ocean trout in Macquarie Harbour. The company produces whole fish, fillets and hot- and cold-smoked fish products. It markets its products domestically and in Asia, the United States and the United Arab Emirates. The company’s head office, processing facility and distribution facility are located in East Devonport, Tasmania.

The company was founded by husband-and-wife team Peter and Una Rockliff, who expanded into aquaculture in 1990 after years in commercial fishing. In 2010, Sealord Group Ltd. acquired a 50% interest of Petuna.

About BAP
A division of the Global Aquaculture Alliance, Best Aquaculture Practices is an international certification program based on achievable, science-based and continuously improved performance standards for the entire aquaculture supply chain — farms, hatcheries, processing plants and feed mills — that assure healthful foods produced through environmentally and socially responsible means. BAP certification is based on independent audits that evaluate compliance with the BAP standards developed by the Global Aquaculture Alliance.
