Scottish Salmon Company First in Scotland to be Awarded BAP Certification

The Scottish Salmon Company is Scotland’s first salmon producer to be awarded Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification for all its marine farm sites, which total 46, the Global Aquaculture Alliance announced in early March.

“To be the first salmon producer in Scotland to be awarded BAP certification for all our marine sites is a true recognition of our exacting standards as well as our passion and commitment to producing premium quality Scottish salmon in a sustainable and responsible way,” said Craig Anderson, CEO of The Scottish Salmon Company. “Our focus is on developing a platform for sustainable business growth. With our BAP certification, we are able to further leverage the provenance and quality of our products to drive our international export strategy, particularly to key targets markets in North America and the Far East.”

Added Mike Berthet, BAP market development manager-Europe, “We look forward to supporting The Scottish Salmon Company in the development of its BAP-certified Scottish salmon in the global marketplace.”

Scottish Salmon Company

The Scottish Salmon Company is an independent, fully integrated salmon-farming business wholly operating in Scotland. Headquartered in Edinburgh, the company breeds, farms and processes its salmon in the Western Highlands and Islands and sells around 26,500 metric tons of Scottish salmon annually to more than 26 countries worldwide.

Administered by GAA, BAP is the world’s most comprehensive third-party aquaculture certification program, with standards encompassing environmental responsibility, social responsibility, food safety, animal health and welfare, and traceability. The BAP program covers the entire aquaculture production chain – processing plants, hatcheries, farms and feed mills. Additionally, the program is compliant with the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), Global Social Compliance Programme (GSCP) and Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI).

The number of BAP-certified processing plants, farms, hatcheries and feed mills is closing in on the 2,000-facility landmark, reaching 1,898 at the end of January. The total includes 1,203 farms, 398 processing plants, 194 hatcheries and 103 feed mills, located in 32 countries and six continents.
